How to Balance Omega 3 and Omega 6 Fatty Acids in Diet

Omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids complement each other inside the body. They should be taken in balanced quantities to ensure proper health and functioning of different organs of the body. Usually, the recommended ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 fatty acids is 3: 1.

Omega 3 fatty acids are DHA, EPA, and ALA. Out of these, DHA and EPA are obtained from fish and fish oil capsules available over the counter. These fatty acids are required for the reduction of triglycerides levels in the body. As a result, they help in reducing bad cholesterol levels and make the heart stronger and healthier.

ALA fatty acid is primarily obtained from flax seed oil. However, it is important to note here that ALA is a long-chain fatty acid which is broken down into short-chain DHA and EPA in the body. Since the process takes a long time, the benefits of flax seed oil are far less than those of fish oil.

Omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids are also known as essential fatty acids, meaning that they can not be manufactured by our body on its own. We must eat a well balanced diet including good plant and animal sources of all nutrients to live a healthy and fruitful life. To prevent various diseases like arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, cancer and cardiovascular disease, these fatty acids are required.

People who eat fish on a regular basis are less likely to become victims of psychological illnesses like depression, anxiety and panic attacks. Bipolar manic depression and postpartum depression in women after childbirth have also been found to be linked with deficiency of DHA in the blood. In addition to this, hyperactivity in children is also caused by DHA deficiency.

Pregnant women are advised to increase their intake of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids through diet and nutritional supplements. The best fish oil supplements available out there are the ones made with pharmaceutical grade fish oil. In addition to this, try to find fish oil capsules made with the oil of the Hoki fish found in New Zealand.

Fish oil can also be consumed in liquid and pure form. However, pure fish oil does not only taste bad but it also contains impurities and toxins from the ocean which may be harmful for the health. It is advised to buy refined, molecularly distilled and filtered fish oil which is normally tasteless and odorless.
